Unusual and Interesting Photos

Part 1

1. What is your reaction to his work?
I think its cool because it turns a regular photo of a building into something new and different.

2. How do you think he made these photos?
I think he copied out the building in the original photo in photo sip and made it transparent, turned it a different angle, and bent it.

3 Think about some buildings you have seen, which ones would be good to take a photo like this? Tell me about those buildings, where are they, could you get easy access to them?
I think the tall buildings like around austin would be good to make a photo like this and they are kinda accessible.

2. Whose classroom would you like to visit and take photos in?
One of the science classrooms or in a language classroom.

3. What will you do, as the photographer, to get amazing photos like you look at today?
I will put the camera in unique angles and move to get the best lighting.

Academic Shoot Preview Assignment

The Story
I think this tells the best story because two girls are doing a science lab that ends up going everywhere. Also the two girls are very excited and happy about it too.

Action and Emotion
This photo shows action and emotion because two students are joking around with a teacher and everyone is laughing and smiling.

Filling The Frame

I think this is an interesting photo because the light source is coming from the experiment. The frame is the dark space and the frame is filled by the two students working on an experiment.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

The article is about photoshopping the natural photos. Each photo they talk about in the article is manipulated in some way. Some are because they want to fix an error in the image or because they didn't like the format and the subject.

I think this photo manipulation is un ethnical because your not getting the true photograph your getting a version that was edited. Also you won't get all the true and reliable detail that was at the event.

_____________________________________________________________

Unethical

I think this photos was unethical because in the edited photo (bottom) your getting somewhat of a  wrong message the soldier looks nonthreatening at all. In the regular photo (top) the soldier looks like he has the civilians at gun point

Ethical

I think this photo is ethnical because no one is being hurt by this. They only moved the pyramids to fill the page. The photographer just wanted to make better, and more interesting photograph.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 4 prompts (Square, Metal, Happy, Bowie)
Some conflicts I ran into is I wanted to find a picture I could take that had an exact square and that was difficult. Also There are many metal things and bowie things but they all seemed to be the same stuff over and over and I wanted to make it different. Happy was easiest because I could've taken a picture of almost anything that makes me or someone else happy.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
I was focused on holding the camera, zoom, and focus. On my square picture i had to zoom to get rid the extra background.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
I would make my metal picture so the rail is lower in the corner to follow rule of thirds.

4. What things would you do the same?

I would keep my photo of the sun the same because its from a unique angle and the sun is in the top right corner which follows the rule of thirds.

5. Finally - go back and edit your blogs with the 4 photos (square, metal, happy, Bowie), tell me what rules of composition (which you just learned about) did you end up actually achieving? Did you have any?
Edited (look at 1st Prompt post)

6. Are you interested in shooting those same prompts again, why?

Yes because I think I can improve knowing and understanding the basic rules better.

Comment

I like the way she took a close up shot to get texture in your square photo.
I also like her happy photo because there are many lines that make the photo stand out. In the bowie photo I think she should've added something in the reflection of the floor to make it interesting.

Framing

Framing

This photo shows framing by having the buildings surround the subject. This surrounds the subject making it easier for the viewer to see what they are supposed to look at. The black and white makes the picture simpler to see framing.

Balance

Balance

This  photo shows balance because the two buildings equal both sides of the image. They make it so the image isn't just busy on one side, the objects are spread out.

Lines

Lines

This photo shows line by the buildings textured exterior. Also the man is angled downward with the lines making the pictures movement in one focused direction.

Rule of Thirds

Rule of Thirds

I think the smoking building is the subject. This photo shows rule of thirds because the subject is not in the center its in the top right corner

Simplicity

Simplicity

This picture is simplicity because the background doesn't interact with the one simple subject. The background is also blurred so it doesn't take away from the subject.

Avoiding Mergers

Avoiding Mergers

This photo is a merger because the people are partly cut-off. The fire men are everywhere ant there is a random shoulder in the bottom right corner that was cut off from the rest of the person.

National Geographic

Michael Patrick O'Neill

2. Tell me why this is your favorite photo:
This is my favorite because I like how each sea loin is doing its own unique pose. I also like how the photo is spaced out and not crowded. Lastly the lighting catches my eye because there is a highlight from the sun at the top and it makes the water a nice shade of blue-green.

3. Think about your world, what photo would you take to submit to this photo contest?

If I had to stay here in austin, I would take a picture of wildlife. The animal I would like to shoot would be a deer. I would try to take an action shot but a still shot with the right background and angle would work too.

Touching People

1. What do you think about this project and photo essay?
I think the idea and work is unique but a bit weird in my opinion.

2. What would you do if someone approached you with a camera and asked you to participate in a photo shoot and then asked you to touch a stranger?

I wouldn't do it, because being that close to someone who i have no idea who they are freaks me out.

3. Think of an unusual photo shoot similar to this one that you think would be fun to go and shoot.

I think it would be fun to shoot people telling a secret to another person and shooting their reaction because every emotion is different.

4. Finally, tell me what you thought of the photography, are the photos good? Do you like looking at them?

I thought the photos were ok, no one really looked happy during the shoot and I expected at least one would. Personally I don't like the topic, But i will say its is a little interesting how diverse the people are in each photo.

Top 40 Photos

Mark Pardew / Reuters
A firefighter gives water to a koala during the devastating Black Saturday bushfires that burned across Victoria, Australia, in 2009.
I picked this photo because I love animals, and when someone has a unique experience with animals it makes it stand out in my mind. The photographer took the photo at a good angle that best shows this touching moment. I think it made the top 40 because people are drawn to pictures that have a touching story.

projects.ajc.com / Via polichicksonline.com (photographer unknown)
Terri Gurrola is reunited with her daughter after serving in Iraq for 7 months.
I picked this photo because there is lots of emotion in the picture.  The photographer took a good photo because they were there at the right moment. The background contrasts the subject of the photo very well. I think this photo made the top 40 because the photo gives off a very strong emotion and people know how hard it is for soldiers to fight for our country and leave there loved ones behind.

Vanderlei Almeida / Getty images
A dog named “Leao” sits for a second consecutive day at the grave of her owner, who died in the disastrous landslides near Rio de Janiero on January 15, 2011.
I picked this photo because I have dogs of my own, and the bond shared between a owner and a dog is very special, and this photo proves that. The photographer took a good photo because the background is very still and peaceful but the land is dirty. I think this photo made the top 40 because the dog looks as if its waiting for its owner to return, but also the graves are all dug but only one filled and that make the picture different.

1st Prompt Shoot

Happy
In this photo i managed to active the rule of thirds. The sun crosses the intersection point that follows that rule.
 Metal
In this photo I didn't follow any rules.
Bowie
In this photo I didn't follow any rules.
Square
This photo I achieved simplicity.

Warm-Up

1. What did you think about that unique idea?
I thought the idea was cool but it creeped me out a little. I thought it was strange how you can take a normal picture like that and make it into something completely different.

2. When you first looked at the photos, did it take you a second to figure out what you were looking at?

When I first looked at the photographs I automatically thought the image was photo shopped until i read the captions. Then I realized they were ordinary pictures turned upside down.

3. Sometime maybe you can try something unique like this…..

I might but as of now I can't think of any unique ideas.

The Camera - History and Information

1. Explain the “camera obscura” effect. How is it achieved?
It is in a dark room if a hole is put in a wall the image out side will be projected upside-down and this is achieved because the hole acted like a lens would on todays cameras.

Auto will control flash and exposure by it self but on program you control the flash and other settings.

7. What is the Portrait mode used for? How does it work?

Portrait is used for taking pictures of people. This blurs out the background and tries to put the most focus on the subject.

8. What is the Sports mode used for? (not just sports) How does it work?
Sports mode is used to take photos of moving things. This slows movement and sets to the highest shutter speed.

9. Why should you do a half press on the trigger button?
This will lock focus and then the camera will be ready to shoot.

10. What does this symbol mean?

 When would you use this?
This means disabled flash, you use this when area doesn't need lighting or natural light is used instead.

11.What does this symbol mean?

The picture will be washed out.

13. What happens to your photo if there is not enough light?
The picture will be too dark to see.

14. What is a “stop.”

A stop is a relative measurement of light.

15. How many stops brighter is the new planet if there are two suns instead of one?

It would be one stop brighter.

16. How many stops brighter is the new planet if there are four sons instead of two?

First Photos - Best and Worst

This first image I think is the best photo because the natural lighting brightens Brooke's white shirt. The dark colors of the back ground also puts emphasis on Brooke. Finally, the flowers add a bit of color to the image.

This second image is the worst photo I think because its too busy. There are people walking in the background, and the background takes emphasis away from Ashlyn. Finally Ashlyn wasn't ready for me to take the photo and should've waited.
